Owls miss out on Discovery

The Owls missed out on pre-season silverware when Paul Sturrock's former club snatched a late 2-1 victory in the final of the Discovery Cup. Wednesday had led through a first half strike by Lee Peacock but an own goal by Patrick Collins in the second half levelled the scores. An 85th minute winner from central defender Garry Kenneth sealed the cup for the tangerines.

Sturrock had rung the changes from the previous day's Semi-final encounter with Wolverhampton Wanderers. Coughlan, Whelan, Partridge and Peacock were the only players to start in both games as the former Dundee United player and manager opted for a more defensive 5-4-1 formation to begin with.

Hungarian defender was given another chance to impress when he started out wide on the left and he did just that by setting up the opening goal of the game. His deep cross eluded everybody but Lee Peacock who controlled nicely before smashing into the net.

Half-time: Dundee Utd 0-1 Owls

Both sides threatened early in the second half but it was United who scored the game's second goal. Their striker Grady clipped the ball over Chris Adamson and whilst there was doubt as to whether or not the ball was going in, a lunge from Patrick Collins knocked the ball into the back of the net.

Chris Brunt wasted a good scoring chance with a left foot shot that went wide, before the SPL side scored the winning goal with just five minutes left. Graeme Lee successfully cleared a corner but the ball knocked back in found it's way to centre-back Kenneth, whose low shot into the corner beat Adamson.

The Owls pushed for a late equaliser but an off-target Steven MacLean header was as close as they came. Paul Sturrock's return to Dundee United turned out to be an unsuccessful as United took the trophy.

AnzOwls' verdict: Disappointing for the Owls to have missed out on some silverware.
