Worrying signs for Wednesday after defeat at the Walkers

The Owls continue to look for a much needed first win of the season after a disappointing and frustrating 2-0 defeat at the Walkers Stadium against fellow Championship strugglers Leicester City. Mark De Vries scored both goals for City, both inside two minutes of each other after having given his side an early 10 minute lead.

There was no coming back for Wednesday who struggled to create much upfront and generally lacked quality across the park. They looked better in the second half and chances fell to Lee Peacock and in particular David Graham, who found himself through on goal after a long ball over the top of the Foxes' defence, but the Scotsman's weak shot beat the keeper but not the post. It was probably Wednesday's best chance of the game and could have been the vital turning point the Owls needed.

New signing Maurice Ross, signed from Glasgow Rangers last week, made his full debut for the Owls but was caught out early on as a long ball by Leicester caught the defender out.

Paul Sturrock's Wednesday side are now languishing near the bottom of the table, winless in six league games.

Half-time: Leicester 2-0 Owls

Paul Sturrock's post match comments:
"It's not like us - they're not the type of goals we normally lose. But you can't come to places like this and be chasing the game after 12 minutes. We had to make two changes in the back four and we lost two goals - plain, simple and easy. A boy making his debut got caught for the first one and one or two of them should have cleared the second one."

"If David Graham had put that chance away at the start of the second half it might have put a different complexion on the game. When you think about it, they had some half-chances but our goalie didn't make any dramatic saves. You'd probably say the other goalie made one or two decent ones."

"We're are not a great passing team - since I got here we never were. When we play square and back we cause ourselves all sorts of concern. I don't expect us to be a long ball team but I expect us to be a penetrative team and play the ball forward."
