Match Report

Brunt-tastic!

A double by the ever impressive Chris Brunt helped the Owls seal only their second league win of the season in a five goal thriller over Coventry at Hillsborough. Paul Sturrock rested defender Richard Wood and brought back into the side the more experienced Graham Coughlan in what was the only change to the side that lost at Crystal Palace in midweek.

But the move paid off when in the 17th minute Coughlan rose to meet a Chris Brunt corner to nod home his third goal of the season.

In the 33rd minute the Sky Blues were gifted a chance to come back level. Referee Mason had judged that David Lucas had brought down City striker Gary McSheffrey, but replays show Lucas clearly took the ball and then the man. The Owls were furious with the decision, but their protests were in vain as McSheffrey stepped up to send Lucas the wrong way and level the match.

Just two minutes before the break Wednesday took the lead again thanks to one of the goals of the season from Northern Ireland winger Chris Brunt. The Ulsterman chested the ball down 35 yards out and unleashed an outrageous half volley into the top corner of Stephen Bywater's goal.

Half-time: Owls 2-1 Coventry

Both sides came close to scoring the game's fourth goal just minutes into the second period. Lee Peacock appeared to be held back as he connected with a Brunt cross, but his effort came back off the post. At the other end, Willo Flood's driven effort flashed wide of the mark.

With just 17 minutes left this match still had some drama left in it. Firstly the Owls threw away their lead for the second time in the match. Andy Morrell's superbly flicked on header from Hughes' corner found the top corner of the net for 2-2.

But five minutes later Wednesday, for the third time in the match, took the lead. Lee Peacock was clearly wrestled to the ground inside the box by Blues' defender Andrew Whing. There were no complaints from Coventry about the decision, but the Owls faithful were clearly unhappy with the continuing poor performance by the man in the middle for showing Whing just the yellow card.

Man of the moment Chris Brunt confidently stepped up to drill the ball home in front of the Kop to make it 3-2.

The win takes the Owls off the bottom of the table, but not quite out of the bottom three, with a game in hand over teams around them.

Paul Sturrock's post match comments:
"Fans of both teams got their money's worth today but we've lost two goals again. Football's all about concentration levels and that's something for which I've got to point my finger at near enough the whole team."

"That's the ups and downs of Brunty. He's got two goals today and his general play was reasonable but he went to sleep from a set piece and we nearly paid dearly for it. I thought the boy Peacock ran the line fantastically and the boy Graham was very lively."

Chris Brunt's post match comments:
"We made things difficult for ourselves but it was a stonewall penalty at the end. It was a well-deserved three points.  We didn't want to go into a two-week break bottom of the league, a few of the lads mentioned that before the game."

"I said to Graham before 'let's see if we can get you another goal.'It was the same again from the first corner.  For the second goal, I just remember David Graham heading it, I just my chest on it and it sat up nicely. From the moment I hit it I knew the keeper wasn't getting it. I've only had one penalty since I've played for Wednesday and scored that one, so I was confident and stuck it away."
