Match Report

Wednesday's luck runs out at Prenton Park

Wednesday's run of four consecutive wins came to an end on Friday as Tranmere Rovers preserved their 100% home record with a thrilling 4-2 win over the Owls.

The Owls will certainly feel they didn't get the rub of the green in this one though, despite recovering from some poor defensive work early on which put them 2-0 down. Rovers were awarded an undeserving 29th minute penalty, replays evident that it was the incorrect decision, which Ryan Taylor had no problems in dispatching.

That was after Calvin Zola 12th minute opener had been cancelled out by Steven MacLean's third goal of the season. The Scotsman found himself in acres of space and unmarked to cooly head home after 27 minutes to draw the game level.

Guylain Ndumbu-Nsungu, Wednesday's top scorer last year, netted his first of the season on the stroke of half-time when he calmly slotted the ball past John Achterberg, set up by MacLean.

Half-time: Tranmere 3-2 Owls

The Owls started the second half the brighter of the two sides but after blowing a good scoring chance they watched as Tranmere counter attacked and scored the vital fourth goal in the 64th minute. Iain Hume took advantage of a defensive error by Bullen and fired a shot in off Guy Branston, fooling David Lucas in Wednesday's goal.

It was a cruel blow for Chris Turner's side but they continued to show good spirit and attacked Tranmere for a way to get back into the game. The nail in the coffin was the sending-off of Branston in the 76th minute. Branston allegedly elbowed Eugene Dadi in the face, an offence which resulted in a direct dismissal for the former Rotherham man.

He will miss Monday's game against Oldham whilst Turner's troops will re-group and look to get their good start to the season back on track with three points against the Latics.

Chris Turner's post match comments:
"Obviously we are disappointed at the result. But we started badly and gave away two poor goals defensively. Entertainment-wise it was a fantastic game and if you get two goals away from home you expect to get something from the game."

AnzOwls' verdict: A spirited effort by the Owls but this wasn't to be their night. Three points on Monday now is imperative.
