Win in the Cup for young Owls side
This report from the official Huddersfield site:
Town's young reserve side gained some valuable experience last
week when they came up against a strong Sheffield Wednesday reserve
side in the Pontins Holidays League Cup. With Peter Jackson choosing
reserve regulars for the LDV clash with Morecambe, the second string
side selected itself from the Academy who, fortunately did not have
a game the previous weekend. Not one of John Dungworth's side had
any first team experience and, despite the defeat, the young Terriers
acquitted themselves with a great deal of credit.
Newly appointed Owls' boss Paul Sturrock saw second half goals from
Jon Shaw and Martin Drury secure three points for the visitors which
included such first team regulars as Ola Tidman, Ndumbu Nsungu and
Liam Needham. Town battled well against the Owls and centre-backs
Tom Clarke and skipper Aaron Hardy frustrated Wednesday during the
opening 45 minutes.
Michael Collins and Matty Young were productive in midfield and
strikers Joe Shaw and Gavin Huxall were lively up front without
having any clear cut chances. Both sides threatened in the second
half and James Hand hit the bar with a cross-cum-shot which Tidman
did well to tip onto the woodwork.
The visitors squandered a couple of chances before Shaw found the
back of the net on the hour mark. Jacob Giles was superb and kept
the deficit down, making a vital save from substitute Poulter midway
through the half, but he could do little about Owls' second goal.
A Drury free-kick from the right flank found the back of the net
after evading all the bodies in the box and wrong-footing Giles.
Half-time: Huddersfield 0-0 Owls
Mark Smith's post match comments:
It was a good result. At times we did well getting down the sides
and producing a few crosses which I know that the gaffer likes to
see, so that was a plus. Jon took his goal really well. It was a
good ball in from Ross Greenwood, Jon had just pulled off the back
of his marker and headed it back across goal - a good finish."
" Martin's was a free-kick on the left which was very similar
to the one Coventry scored against the first team in the Carling
Cup. It eluded everybody and went it at the far post."
"I think there was a bit of pressure on some of the lads because
the gaffer was there for the first time. A few tried a bit too hard
and, as a result, didn't do as well as I know they can."
