Owls smash nine past hapless Barrow

A Sheffield Wednesday XI smashed a poor Barrow AFC outfit 9-0 in a pre-season friendly at Holker Street. Even Barrow, not expected to beat a semi-strong Owls outfit, were left red faced after being on the wrong end of one of the biggest scorelines in the club's history.

Owls fans would have to cast their memories back to the late 1980s to remember when a Wednesday side last scored as many goals in a competetive match (8-0 v Aldershot).

Jon Shaw did his first team chances no harm in bagging a hat-trick whilst Matthew Hamshaw, also facing tough competition within the squad for his place in the side, scored a brace. Guylain Ndumbu-Nsungu, Paul Smith, Lewis McMahon also grabbed a goal each. New defender Patrick Collins netted his first in the blue and white shirt too.

The result left Assistant Manager Colin West signing his side's praises.

Half-time: Barrow 0-5 Owls

Colin West's post-match comments...
"It doesn't matter who you're playing, that's a fantastic scoreline. The lads did exceptionally well and scored some great goals. They were professional from the warm-up all through the game. They closed down and stopped a Barrow team who were big and physical from passing the ball. We got close and tight, then when we had the ball we made the pitch big and passed through them."
