Bullen steals a point from The Posh
Defender turn striker Lee Bullen salvaged the Owls a point from
their game at Peterborough United in midweek when his header from
a Patrick Collins cross. The 1-1 draw kept Paul Sturrock's unbeaten
league record as Wednesday manager in tact.
In all honesty it was a game the Owls really should've won. The
Posh had just one win in their previous ten outings but Sturrock
had, rather strangely, opted for a defensive 4-5-1 formation to
start the game. The plan backfired and he reverted back to 4-4-2
for the second half.
Lee Bullen, who has played upfront previously in his career, was
switched to play upfront with Steven MacLean and the move paid off
when the Scot grabbed his second goal of the season in the 85th
minute with an unstoppable header into the top left-corner.
Sturrock's injury woes increased when goalkeeper David Lucas was
forced off after only 24 minutes, replaced by Ola Tidman, and is
expected to be out of action for at least a fortnight. Meanwhile
Wednesday continue their hectic schedule of five games in 14 days.
Half-time: Peterborough
1-0 Owls
Paul Sturrock's post match comments:
" Sometimes managers get things wrong, I'm going to put my
hand up and say that I maybe asked players to do things without
really being able to work on them in the first half. We played a
system that is probably alien to the players we have.We have young
players who didn't adapt to it very well."
"I thought Peterborough played well in the first half and merited
to go in leading (at half-time). I was quite happy that we were
only 1-0 down but we changed it in the second half, went to a simpler
system and I think we dominated the second half.We had three or
four chances, it looked as if it was going to get away from us,
then we get the goal."
"We played on Sunday, it is hard to have the trek here and play
a difficult game again, with just 48 hours rest. I think that was
part of why we looked leg-weary at the start, strangely enough we
got stronger as the game went on so."
"He (Bullen) had to do something right on the night. I have had
a word with him about it. He had a torrid 90 minutes, I think he'd
be the first to admit it. I knew he was a striker before he was
a defender. It is a bit unfortunate for Lee because he came as a
right back and we've pushed him into playing centre half as well
and sometimes it is a difficult thing to do."
" I thought he played very well on Sunday and had a poor game
tonight, but there were three or four who didn't play to the tempo
and the pace of the game that we showed on Sunday. Had they done
that, I feel we would have benefited. We're trying to ask a very
young squad of players to do things in a very difficult league and
we will take confidence from getting back into the game tonight."
Lee Bullen's post match comments:
"I think I saved my own bacon as well because the amount of abuse
I got from the manager at half-time was unbelievable! He sent me
out with the orders of getting a goal to cover my own back a bit.
He was unhappy with the overall play at the back. Our shape there
wasn't the best, we weren't squeezing up enough and obviously had
their goal - it was my man who scored. I won the initial header,
headed it out and never reacted quickly enough to get back in and
it was him who scored, so the manager certainly let me know that
he wasn't happy."
"I remember the ball coming in. I was steaming into the box to try
and get onto it, but the ball was more cut back very flat and it
was perfect timing for me to get on it. I don't think I was far
into the box and I tried to get as much power on it as possible.
99 times out of 100, you wouldn't score in that top corner but luckily
enough, it was on the night."
AnzOwls verdict: Not a great result against a struggling
Peterborough side, but a point is better than none.
