Dons snatch a point at the death
Wednesday were only a minute away from celebrating Paul Sturrock's
first home game in charge with a win, but instead had to settle
for a share of the spoils in a frustrating 1-1 draw with Milton
Keynes Dons.
Jon-Paul McGovern scored his first goal for the club in the 66th
minute, turning and sliding home the ball after skipper Chris Marsden
had bravely chested the ball down for him. It looked like it would
be enough for the Owls to take all three points, but MK Dons' top
scorer this season pounced on Lucas' spilled save to tap home an
89th minute equaliser.|
So frustration for Sturrock who watched his Owls side crash out
of the LDV Vans Trophy in midweek to Chester City and now throw
away two league points at home. The Hillsborough hoodoo continues
it seems, with the Owls having twice in eight league and cup games
at home this season. Wednesday have also failed to score more than
one goal in any home game this term.
Half-time: Owls
0-0 MK Dons
Paul Sturrock's post match comments:
"If we'd have cleared that header back out to where it came
from that goal would never have arisen. Instead it plopped down
in front of our goal and cost us dear."
"We're a team that doesn't header the ball well in either box. We're
sending boys up for set pieces and they don't get on the end of
anything. It's something we're going to have to rectify and that
can only be done on the training ground. I'm pleased we've got a
Sunday game and we can have a solid week together."
"I do feel there was a reaction to Wednesday's game. The fans will
walk away disappointed but I think they might be saying there was
a wee shift today. There was a better work rate and better commitment."
"We've got to be more clinical. That's twice we've been one-nothing
up and we've drawn one and lost one. We have to go for the jugular."
Chris Brunt's post match comments:
"It is disappointing we didn't get three points and to lose a goal
in the last minute. But I think it is a far better performance than
Wednesday night. The lads worked far harder than they did the other
night and I feel we probably deserved all three points."
" I remember Macca heading it back into the box (for McGovern's
goal), he did well to get it back in and Adam Proudlock shielded
it and spun. JP was in the right place and it was a good finish,
through their boy's legs into the bottom corner. I was down at the
time (of MK Dons' goal) and off the pitch. I just remember it going
through a crowd of bodies, David Lucas made a good save but the
lad's just followed up."
AnzOwls' verdict: The Hillsborough hoodoo hits again. The
Owls home record so far is not impressive reading. In all competitions:
