Skipper steals a point at the death

Wednesday's woeful end to the season continued as struggling Brentford were denied all three points by skipper Dean Smith's injury time equaliser. Brentford had taken the lead in the 69th minute through Sonko but the Owls were to steal a draw at the death in what had been a game unpleasing on the eye.

Chris Turner kept the same side that he had barked at following a 2-0 defeat at Grimsby Town last weekend, but was boosted by the return to the squad of Paul McLaren. The former Luton Town man was to come on as a sub, marking his first appearance for 2004.

The result was another disappointing one for the fans who would like to see their team finish with some momentum ready for next season. A number of players are still playing for their contracts next term, but on showings like this Turner will be doing a lot of recruiting during the summer.

Wednesday play another struggling team in Notts County, thrashing 4-1 by Colchester United this weekend, on Easter Monday. Mark Robins returns from injury and Irishman Alan Quinn returns from his five match ban. Top goalscorer Guylain Ndumbu-Nsungu sits out the next three games after his red card at Blundell Park last weekend.

Half-time: Owls 0-0 Brentford

Chris Turner's post match comments:
"It's a difficult period for the players. There are a lot of things happening around the club, which doesn't help. When it's a situation where the manager leaves if a new chairman comes in, and 15 players are out of contract and wondering what's going to happen, it's hard to get some cohesion "

"I've never experienced this before in my four or five years in management. We have all this negativity around the place. But we kept going against Brentford and didn't get beaten, even though we didn't play well."
