Match Report

Four in a row for Seasiders over Owls

This report from TeamTalk.com:

Blackpool recorded their fourth league and cup victory of the season over Sheffield Wednesday, winning 4-1 at Bloomfield Road. It was also Blackpool's fourth successive victory, but their rejuvenation has come too late to secure a play-off place. Blackpool went ahead early on courtesy of a beautifully crafted goal when a lengthy build-up in midfield involving Richie Wellens and Ciaran Donnelly ended with John Murphy stabbing home.

Just before the half hour Mike Sheron grabbed the first of his two goals when he completed another good move involving Wellens and youngster Jamie Burns, who provided the vital through-ball. Wednesday pulled one back with a magnificent 25-yard free-kick from on-loan Middlesbrough midfielder Chris Brunt.

But, after a drab start to the second half, Blackpool lifted themselves with Sheron's second - a deflected effort - and Donnelly and Martin Bullock combined to set up Murphy late on.

Half-time: Blackpool 2-1 Owls

Chris Turner's most match comments: "We played like a five-a-side team, pretty at times on the ball, but we didn't do the basics that were required to win a football match. Some of our so-called better players didn't perform today and young Chris Brunt was the only highlight of our performance."

AnzOwl's verdict: The Owls remain winless in April, and the season is coming to a sorry end.
