Match Report

Bonvin helps to make it two from two for Yorath

Match report from the Soccernet website:

Terry Yorath's 100% record as caretaker manager at Sheffield Wednesday continued with a 3-1 victory over Barnsley. Barnsley's eighth league defeat leaves them one off the bottom in the First Division.

Nigel Spackman's side was not helped by the 65th-minute dismissal of Carl Regan for a reckless challenge on Owen Morrison. However, the Owls making a miserable start when going a goal down in the fifth minute.

Isaiah Rankin had already missed a sitter two minutes previously after being set up by Kevin Gallen, before the latter fired a stunning right-foot 20-yard volley past goalkeeper Kevin Pressman into the top left-hand corner from a Lee Crooks free-kick.

But Gerald Sibon headed home his fifth of the season midway through the half to haul Wednesday level, a goal which sparked a flurry of activity. Sibon and Pablo Bonvin both came close to adding a second, while Tykes full-back Chris Barker flashed an angled 25-yard drive inches beyond Pressman's right-hand post.

Bonvin did likewise to Andy Marriott soon after from 10 yards before the Barnsley keeper produced a sensational fingertip stop to turn away a 15-yard left-foot shot on the stroke of half time.

Half-time: Owls 1-1 Barnsley

But Bonvin was not to be denied and 13 minutes after the interval he latched onto a Steven Haslam through ball before lashing an 18-yard shot beyond Marriott.

Regan's dismissal, 20 minutes after coming on as a half-time sub, only added to Spackman's misery prior to salt being rubbed into what could prove to be potentially fatal wounds as Bonvin sealed a night of triumph for Wednesday with his fifth goal of the season.
